Ghazali and the concern of harmonizing politics and sharia in Iranian civilization

Abstract:

Ghazali as a major Islamic jurist and theologician is known as a realist in political thought and his theory of Islamic state. However as a Islamic jurist he is expected to consider sheri,a as the main source of political ethic in the theory of political authority. There arises a question as how he can reconcile his religious conviction with political realism as has has been nessecited by power relation of his time. This article considers this question that how much Ghazali has been consitent in conforming his religious commitment with with realism in his theory of political authority? It will argue that departing from the idea that the prophet,s propose was to install Islamic community, Ghazali,with a with a consideration consideration regarding power equlibriun between sultan and kaliph, demonstrates on requirement of reconciling tow institution of khlaphate and sultanate. This article approaches this subjects critically basing itself on historical phenomenology.
