Residential Stability in Informal Settlements of the City of Tabriz, Iran

Examining the factors affecting the willingness to stay long-term in informal settlements and paying attention to the amenities in this type of settlements have always been important for researchers, planners and trustees of this field. Residential stability or in other words population stability is one of the important components of population and social planning in formal and informal settlements. The purpose of this research is to explain the residential stability in the informal settlements of the city of Tabriz. The present research is a survey study and in terms of time, it is a cross-sectional study, the data of which was collected through a closed-ended questionnaire. Based on the results obtained from the research, citizens living in informal settlements have moderate residential stability and sense of social amenities. Research data shows that there is a significant relationship between feeling of social amenities, social capital, expandability, feeling of social security, social cohesion, sense of belonging to place and social identity with residential stability. The results related to the fitting of multivariate analysis models show that five variables (sense of belonging to a place, social trust, sense of social security, normativity and sense of social pleasantness) explain a total of 0.382 of the variance of residential stability. Based on the results, it can be concluded that investment in non-material components such as social capital, social trust, social security, along with the physical factor of social comfort, can be considered in urban planning.
