Recognizing the effect of internal and external arousal on strengthening reading skills

Abstract:
Background and Aim

Reading is an active process that increases children's knowledge capacity and shapes their ideas and thinking and gives them meaning. It is a mental activity in which the physical, psychological, and biological characteristics of individuals are at work. The aim of this study was to identify the effect of internal and external arousal on the development of reading skills in elementary school students.

Research Method

The present study was conducted with a qualitative methodological approach and the research method was content analysis. Information was collected using in-depth interviews. Participants were 33 primary school teachers in Golestan. Sampling was performed by purposive method and continued until data saturation. Data analysis was performed simultaneously with data collection with thematic analysis approach.

Results

Data analysis led to the extraction of thirteen main topics, sixteen sub-topics and twenty-two sub-topics in two main categories as internal and external arousal. Intrinsic motivation includes topics of interest, spontaneity and choice, reading ideas, motivations, needs and goals, expectations, emotions, usability,

Conclusion

The results show that although the improvement of reading skills depends on the internal and personality characteristics of individuals, but among them, some external factors are also effective. Therefore, in the continuum of improving reading skills, the individual is in one position and factors such as family, educational system, libraries, etc. are on the other side, and the coordination and joint efforts of all of them improve reading skills
