Investigating the Factors Related to Safety Hazards and Falls in the Elderly Undergoing Hemodialysis Visiting the Hospitals in Tehran
Falling is an important indicator for measuring the safety of the elderly. In order to implement effective interventions and reduce the injuries caused by falling in the elderly, it is necessary to determine the importance of each risk factor. The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the factors related to safety hazards and falls in the elderly undergoing hemodialysis visiting the hospitals in Tehran in 2021.
The present research is a descriptive study conducted on 197 elderly people undergoing hemodialysis visiting hospitals in Tehran. The samples were selected through convenience sampling. The data collection tools consisted of a demographic characteristics scale and the Tinetti assessment tool. The data were analyzed using the U-Man-Whitney test, Spearman's correlation coefficient, and the Kal-Wallis test, through SPSS 21 software.
Ethical Considerations:
The research objectives were explained to the participants and data confidentiality was ensured. The informe consent was obtained from the participants.
The mean age of the participants was 70.02 ± 8.12 years and the fall risk was high (57.3%). There was a significant relationship between fall risk and demographic characteristics, including age, gender, educational level, marital status, underlying diseases, economic status, the number of falls, the duration of undergoing dialysis, medications, and the use of mobility aids (p<0.05).
According to the results, the frequency of fall risk in the elderly was significantly high. The majority of the elderly undergoing hemodialysis are threatened by several fall risk factors, which must be considered in the health assessment performed by nurses. On the other hand, with better and more accurate knowledge of the factors affecting the chance of falling in the elderly undergoing hemodialysis, it can be reduced by taking preventive measures. As a result, the elderly’s quality of life and longevity will be increased.
