Understanding Literary Text: How Sign Denotes Meaning

The purpose of this study is to introduce certain standards for appreciating the fundamentals of understanding and interpretation of text. These categories are sign, structure, role, and value. Using these criteria, one can discriminate between linguistic signs and literary signs as well as optional and unstable denotation.In linguistic works, we deal with the fact that word denotes meaning while in literary works sign denotes meaning. Meanwhile, in text interpretation, it is not necessary to use structural relationship as a criterion.
