A History of Parliamentary and Presidential Elections Terms in Lebanon

Abstract:
The institution of elections has a long history in Lebanon, culminating in the adoption of certain regulations in 1845 according to which election of two assembly's members was entrusted to the people. The first parliamentary elections law was adopted in 1922 containing 140 articles. Hence the representatives were directly elected by the Lebanese. Since then, parliamentary elections laws became subject to frequent changes, the last of which has been the 2008 amendment of the parliamentary elections act. This is the most comprehensive elections law among the previous ones and the legislators have tried to further contribute to the transparency and health of the elections. Along with the parliament, the position of presidency was first recognized in 1926 with the adoption of the first constitution and its election was entrusted to the parliament and the senate. But today the president is elected simply by the members of the parliament.
