Sheep and goat population characteristics and quantitative traits in Qom province

This study was conducted to evaluate sheep husbandry system and some of its related characteristics at Qom province. The main parameters were livestock details، type of population، sheep and goat flock size، data related to lambing rate، selling، fattening، substituting، mortality and also informations about quantitative traits. 161 flocks were chosen based on classification and random sampling through each classe. Data from each flock is gathered using Questioner form. Considered data were about sheep and goat rearing condition at Qom province and their management systems. Present and past population size، number of sheep (any type of sheep)، goat، lamb، kid and other type of animals in flocks were followed as well as number of lambing، culling، rearing، selling، fattening، substituting and mortality. Data were analyzed by SPSS software and descriptive statistics regarding parameters were calculated. According to the results، average flock size in Qom province was 444 ± 57 head per flock. Average number of ewe، ram، young ram and ewe and lambs were 184±26; 5±1; 13±5; 35±9 and 133±22 head respectively. Average number of female goat، male goat and kids were 42±10; 5±1 and 27±7 head respectively. Average weaning and separating age for lambs were 3 and 4 months and average number of mortality in adult sheep، lambs، goat Kid and adult goats were 3±10; 5±14; 5±14 and 1±4 head respectively.
