Survey of factors associated with soft drink consumption among secondary school students in Farooj city in 2010

Worldwide and in Iran there are high tendency for consumption soft drink. Scientific and medical community are concerned about it harmful side effects. The aim of this study was to determine factors associated with soft drink consumption in secondary school students in Farooj city in 2010. This study is a descriptive-analytical type. A convenience sample included 220 students studying in secondary schools in Farooj city were selected by multi stage sampling method. Demographic, factors associated with soft Drink consumption were two instruments for collecting data in the present study. Reliability and validity of scales had estimated. Statistical analysis of data was performed with SPSS software for Windows. The results showed that 94/1 percents of students are drinking soft drink. Majority of students are drinking soft drink at home and then parties. About half of students reported that soft drink consumption can be increasing obesity, osteoporosis, teeth decay and reducing appetite. Important factors for soft drink consumption in students were consumption of soft drink by friend, enjoy soft drink with food consumption; love flavored soft drink and receive pocket money of parents. Consumption of Soft drink in students is a high level and implementing various interventions with focus on its main determinants, it is necessary.
