Anesthesia management of a known case of Progeria for reduction of hip and shoulder dislocation

Message:
Abstract:
Background
Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syn-drome is a rare, fatal genetic condition characterized by an appearance of accelerated aging in children. These patients begin to display many characteristics of accelerated aging at around 18-24 months of age that often leads to death caused by atherosclerosis (heart disease) at an average age of thirteen years (with a range of about 8–21 years). We present a case of progeria that needs anesthesia and surgery because of joint dislocation. The anesthetic management of these cases can be difficult because of anatomical and physiological changes and it may be a challenge for an anesthesiologist due to the difficult airway and ischemic heart diseaseReport: An eleven-year-old female with known progeria syndrome presented with combined hip and shoulder dislocation that candidate for closed reduction. Our anesthetic regimen, after induction of anesthesia, was general anesthesia with mask, due to airway problem and short duration of surgery.
Conclusion
Progeria patients have cardiovascular, pulmonary and cerebrovascular disease. Therefore, before undergoing anesthesia these patients should undergo a thorough cardiovascular evaluation as well as a careful evaluation of their airway
