A study of nitrogen effect on tropane alkaloids levels of Hyoscyamus niger L

Hyoscyams niger L. is an important medicinal plant, belonging to Solanaceae family. This plant is a rich source of medicinal substances, including tropane alkaloids.In this investigation, we studied the effects of different concentrations of nitrogen (0, 12.5, 27.5, 41, 55, 69, 83 mg. Kg-1 soil) on growth and tropane alkaloid production. After the extraction of tropane alkaloids, they were analyzed by TLC and HPLC. The results showed that Control plants had higher contents of total alkaloid than treated plants. Treated plants had more fresh and dry weight and the highest contents of total alkaloid were observed in roots.
