Relationship between Maternal Hemoglobin during Pregnancy and Maternal Demographic Characteristic

Anemia is one of the most common nutritional problems in the world, especially in developing countries that can increase maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Several factors including BMI, maternal age, and education are risk factors of anemia during pregnancy. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between hemoglobin changes and some maternal demographic characteristic. This prospective study was conducted on 560 pregnant women referred to health centers of Gilan in years 2010-2011. Hemoglobin concentration was measured in first and third trimester of pregnancy. Finally, the relationship between maternal hemoglobin changes during pregnancy and maternal demographic characteristic was analyzed by using t-test, chi Square and ANOVA tests. P value less than 0.05 was considered significant. Mean of maternal age and parity were 27.79±6.19 year and1.87±1.03, respectively. Mean of hemoglobin concentration were 12.06 gr/dl and 11.61, respectively in first and third trimester of pregnancy. Significant differences were found between hemoglobin concentration in first trimester of pregnancy and maternal age (p=0.016), gestational age (p=0.000) and interval between pregnancies (p=0.008). But no significant difference were seen between hemoglobin concentration in third trimester during pregnancy and BMI (p=0.354), maternal weight gain during pregnancy (p=0.113) and maternal age (p=0.183). Maternal age, end of gestational age and interval between pregnancies can effect on hemoglobin concentration in first trimester of pregnancy.
