An Assessment of Student's Organizational Belonging and Commitment at Shiraz University

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to assess student's organizational belonging and commitment based on demographic factors at Shiraz University. The target population included 2,708 undergraduate and graduate students who entered in 2009. Using stratified cluster sampling 337 participants were selected and were given Demiray's (2008) organizational belonging and commitment questionnaire. Data were analyzed both descriptively and inferentially. Results showed: The rate of organizational belonging and commitment of Shiraz University's students is less than optimal level of adequacy (75%) and higher than the minimum acceptable level (50%). Women have higher average of organizational belonging and commitment in comparison with men. The engineering students and basic sciences students have the highest and lowest means of organizational belonging and commitment, respectively; but the difference is not significant. Humanities Students have the highest rate of organizational belonging and commitment to their university whereas engineering students have the lowest. The graduate student's level of organizational belonging and commitment is significantly more than the undergraduates.
