Pregnancy in Mashhad Imam Reza Hospital burn unit patients: Report of a series of 17 cases over a period of 2 years

Although Thermal injury sustained during pregnancy is not frequent it presents special management problems for both the gravid woman and her unborn child. Burn can exhaust mother who are under stress of pregnancy. Because of lack of available data the results of the management of pregnant burns patients, admitted in Imam Reza burn center during an 18-month period, (1390-91). were analysed. pregnancy was established by the use of ultrasonography and urine gravindex test Obstetric support and Periodic ultrasonic examination was started for all burned pregnant patients. Burn wound management was the same as other groups. 17 pregnant patients have been treated with burns over a period of 1.5 years. During this period total admissions to the burn unit were 1260. There were 321women of child-bearing age, with burns ranging between 15 and 100 per cent TBSA Mean hospital stay was 38 days and The most frequent mechanism of burn was flame There was no need to perform a Caesarean section to salvage a near-term foetus. Urgent delivery was not necessary to save mother or fetus In term of outcome 3 of mothers and 5 of fetus died as a result of burns. All mother with fetal deathhad TBSA of more than 70% As reported rates of burn in pregnant women vary widely across studies there must be undiagnosed cases. we suggest routine screening of pregnancy in all adult burn female group. As percentages of TBSA were more than 70% in all died cases and all of them had third degree burns it seems that maternal and fetal death in our study was affected by severity of burns.
