The Antibacterial Activity of the Hydroalcoholic Extract of Zataria Multiflora Boiss against Antibiotic-Resistant Pseudomonas Aeruginosa and Staphylococcus Aureus

Considering the increasing resistance of pathogenic bacteria to common antimicrobial agents، researchers seek alternative antimicrobial agents of plant origin. Zataria multiflora Boiss of the Lamiaceae family has antimicrobial effects. The present study was carried out to determine the antibacterial effects of the hydroalcolic extracts of Zataria multiflora boiss against Pseudomonas areuginosa and Staphylococcus aureus strains، resistant to different antibiotics. The extracts of Zataria multiflora Boiss were obtained، using a rotary machine. In total، 11 Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains and 9 Staphylococcus aureus strains were obtained from the urinary tract infection of patients، referring to a hospital in Zabol city، Iran. Afterwards، the antibiotic resistance، Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC)، and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of plant extracts on Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were determined، using dilution plate method. The results indicated that the effects of the extracts were insignificant at lower concentrations. The extracts at a concentration of 10 mg/ml had the most significant inhibitory effect against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. On the other hand، the extracts at a concentration of 10 mg/ml showed the most significant cytotoxic effect. As the results indicated، the extracts have antibacterial effects at high concentrations. Therefore، these compounds can be applied for medical treatments.
