COMPARING THE EFFECT OF IRANIAN AND NON-IRANIAN TOOTHPASTE ON THE PH OF SALIVA AMONG THE STUDENTS OF RAFSANJAN DENTAL FACULTY, 2014

Salivary pH is a prognostic factor for progression of dental caries. It is accepted that solution of minerals is facilitated by reducing pH and acidity of oral cavity. As far as the utilization of tooth brush with tooth paste is a practical solution to reduce the amount of carries and to promote the oral hygiene, the purpose of this study was to compare the effect of Iranian and non-Iranian toothpaste on the PH of saliva among the students of Rafsanjan dental faculty. This randomized crossover clinical trial study was performed on 30 subjects. Salivary pH was measured in three stages: before using the toot paste; one day after using the first toothpaste; and one day after using the second toothpaste (72 hours after the washout of first toothpaste). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 21. In this study 28 students including 19 boys (%67.9) and 9 girls (%32.1) were evaluated. The data showed that before using both toothpastes, the average unit of pH did not show any significant difference. The average of pH unit after using Crest toothpaste were significantly higher than before (P=0.005). Also the average of pH unit in Crest group were significantly higher than Darougar (P=0.013) The result of this study showed that both the Iranian and non Iranian toothpastes had the ability to increase the pH of saliva significantly compared to the baseline but the average of salivary pH did not show any significant difference for none of the toothpaste.
