Determination of antimicrobial resistance pattern of Acinetobacter baumanii isolated from patients in intensive care unit (ICU)

Nowadays Acinetobacterbaumannii strains resistant to multi-drugs (MDR) are as one of the most problematic opportunistic pathogens, especially in the intensive care unit (ICU) in the world. This study aimed to characterize the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of Acinetobacter baumanii isolated from patients in intensive care unit (ICU) of Motahari hospital, Gonbad, Golestan. The clinical samples isolated from hospitalized patients in ICU sent to the laboratory for detecting Acinetobacterbaumannii by biochemical tests and confirmed by PCR and antibiotic susceptibility test performed and then the obtained data were analyzed by SPSS software and chi-square test. According to the antibiotic susceptibility testing, from 50 Acinetobacterbaumannii isolates of ICU, 64%, 24% and 12% of isolates were MDR, Non MDR and XDR respectively.The highest rate of antibiotic resistance was to Ceftriaxone, Ticarcilline and Erythromycin, also the minimum resistance was to Minocycline. Due to the fact that the rate of MDR was high in this study, the antibiotic susceptibility test is necessary before prescribing antibiotics and the correct use of antibiotics should be considered. Since it was found in our study that all strains insensitive to Imipenem were susceptible to Tobramycin and Minocycline, for treatment of infections caused by strains which are resistant to Imipenem, the combination of other antibiotics such as Tobramycin can be used.
