Conservative Management of a Large Odontogenic Keratocyst

Abstract:
Background and Aim
The term “odontogenic keratocyst” was used to refer to jaw cysts with keratinized epithelium which are recently classified by WHO into the category of benign neoplasms and the term “odontogenic keratocyst tumor” was suggested for them. Various methods including curettage and damage resection are applied to treat this pathological damage.
Case report: Patient was a 36-year-old woman with a large para-keratinized odontogenic keratocyst in mandible which extended from first premolar tooth on the left to the ascending ramus on the right and led to the root resorption in involved teeth. Considering the extent of damage, damage decompression was done first for the patient. Eight months later following obvious size reduction, the damage was resected completely and peripheral ostectomy was performed. 28-month follow-up and radiographic examinations showed bone formation at the site of damage and there is still no sign of reoccurrence.
Conclusion
Using decompression technique and then damage resection in large odontogenic keratocysts has successful results.
