Epistemic value of descriptive definition
Author(s):
Abstract:
In traditional logic, descriptive means defining something through its exclusive qualities and essentials such that they let you know about the thing defined. According to most logicians, descriptive is, however, bound to certain conditions which [if applied] render it useless. They are thus compelled to term the definitions of 'existence, 'secondary intelligible's whether logical or philosophical as verbal, based on tautological analysis, giving no new knowledge. Relative essential categories cannot be defined by their qualities as on the principle of 'priority of existence', descriptive is a negative statement having no subject.But by reviewing the definition of descriptive and its conditions and by generalizing them to non-essential qualities, one can present a new approach on the basis of which one can increase the branches of descriptive, its domain and functions to the extent that it could include relative and non-essential accidents. Thus one can say that the definition of existence, secondary concepts and most of the essential definitions are descriptive definitions and being synthetic propositions. It could also include analytic qualities. As a result, statements concerning divine attributes will also be informative statements capable of being used as a basis for a proof.
