Abstract:
Bahram V or Bahram the Gur (438-420 A.D) is one of the kings that memories of his life and his rule have intermingled with stories and legends in historical and literary sources of the Islamic era. He is the king of history and legends and many stories and legends are retold about him and occasionally he is portrayed as a legendary king or a warrior champion. One of the well-known stories about Bahram the Gur is the story of his battle with the lions and coronation which is mentioned in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh as well as in many historical sources of Islamic Era. This research aims at studying the story of Bahramʼs coronation and his battle with the lions comparatively in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh and in the most important historical sources of Islamic era. Based on the results of this research, in general the main themes of accounts of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh and the most important historical sources of Islamic era about coronation of Bahram the Gur and his battle with the lions are the same and in the study of Sasanid history, Shahnameh should be regarded as a historical source along with other historical sources.
