Comparative Study of the Concept of Determinism in the Works of Émile Zola and Mahmoud Dowlatabadi
The subject of literary schools and their impact on the writers of various nations is one of the domains of comparative literature. The study of the concept of determinism as the pillar of naturalism in L'Assommoir by Emil Zola, as well as The Past Time of Old men by Mahmoud Dowlatabadi, can be an appropriate case for comparative study. Studies indicate that Zola, the founder of the school of Naturalism in France, based on the deterministic view, depicts L'Assommoir characters in the context of genetic determinism and environmental determinism. Under the influence of the naturalistic determinism philosophy, Dowlatabadi considers the destiny of the characters of The Past Time of Old men under the control of genetic determinism and environmental determinism, as well as a third type of determinism that can be called “indeterminism”. Therefore, it can be concluded that Dowlatabadi, with a different view based on Iran's cultural and social circumstances, portrayed a new type of naturalism in fictional literature.
