Parenting Attitude to Literacy and Cognitive Skillsin Preschool Children
This study was conducted with the aim of recognizing the role of parenting attitude to literacy in predicting cognitive skills in children between the ages of 5 years old to 5 years old and 11 months. 128 children (66 boys and 62 girls) were selected from Borazjan, through randomized cluster sampling method. The study design was correlational and the children completed two scales of Early Cognitive Skills (Hamnavay-e Avay-e Royesh, 1394) while their parents completed the Home Literacy Environment Scale (Hamnavay-e Avay-e Royesh, 1394). Data analysis indicated that home literacy environment has a positive correlation with early child’s cognitive skills. The results of multiple regression analysis indicated that home literacy environment explains 24% of the variance of early cognitive skills (14%reading-writing skills and 10% math skills) in children, and the parent’s interest in reading subscale (from literacy environment scale) predicts 4% of children’s reading-writing skills. Findings emphasize on the importance of enriching family environment and awareness in increasing the early cognitive skills in preschoolers, and preventing educational downfall in each grade
