Evaluation of the performance of web search engines in retrieving the information in the field of information and knowledge based on seven indicators

This study investigates the performance of web searching engine in retrieving the information in the field of information and knowledge.

The survey method is descriptive. So, the Five keywords (that ranked by experts) from papers entitled "2016 top trends in academic libraries" from "College and Research Libraries" journal were selected. Then 50 retrieved documents are at the top of the list of five search engines (Google, Yahoo, ASK, Bing and OAL) using the same search formula, were investigated.

The results showed that Google's performance was higher based on the indicators of relative recall (0. 24), precision (0.824), F ratio (0.36) and failure ratio (8.8). For the indicators of the novelty ratio (0.43) and the expected search time (0.60), the performance of the ASKwashigh. In addition, Yahoo (0.714) has a better performance coverage ratio.

Resultsindicate that for the precision of retrieval the Google search engine, for the new information the ASK search engine and for the comprehensiveness the Yahoo search engine are acceptable.
