Prevalence and risk factors of musculoskeletal disorders in nurses working in Khorramabad teaching hospitals in 1398

Abstract:
Background

Musculoskeletal disorders are one of the most important problems in the nursing profession. Considering the importance of the subject and the dangers of this disorder, the purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders and the factors affecting it in the nursing profession.

Materials and Methods

The present study is a cross-sectional-analytical study in which the risk factors and prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in the nursing profession of Khorramabad teaching hospitals in 1398 have been evaluated. A total of 210 nurses were enrolled in the study by stratified sampling. The data collection tool was the Nordic Musculoskeletal Disorders Questionnaire. Mann-Whitney and Chi-square tests were used to analyze the data.

Results

In this study, out of 210 samples, 114 (54.3%) were male and 96 (45.7%) were female. The mean age of nurses was 30.46 ± 7.93 years with a maximum of 55 years and a minimum of 20 years. The mean BMI of nurses was 24.40± 2.3 with a maximum of 34.05 and a minimum of 17.54. The overall prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in at least one member was 206 (98.1%).  There was a significant relationship between gender and musculoskeletal disorders in the neck, shoulders and wrists (p<0.05). But there was no significant relationship between gender and musculoskeletal disorders in the elbow, upper back, lower back, buttocks, buttocks, thighs, knees, ankles (p> 0.05). Also, a significant relationship was observed between BMI and musculoskeletal disorders in the elbow and upper back (p<0.05).

Conclusion

The most musculoskeletal disorders of the nursing staff were in the shoulders, neck, knees, upper back and lower back, ankles, thighs, buttocks, buttocks, wrists, and elbows, respectively. Therefore, regarding the reduction of musculoskeletal disorders in nurses, nursing managers should be aware of the results of this study, by establishing proper communication with nurses and their support and creating a suitable environment for nurses to continue their professional activities in order to reduce physical needs and psychological pressures. And focus on increasing the quality of life.
