Structural model of loneliness based on narcissistic personality orientation and quality of parent-child relationship in individuals with borderline personality construction

The aim of this study was to investigate the mediating role of narcissistic personality construction in the relationship between the quality of parent-child relationships and feelings of loneliness in individuals with borderline personality orientation.

The research method was descriptive-correlational and the statistical population of this study included all patients with borderline personality orientation referring to counseling centers and psychological services in Qom in a period of 9 months from July 2016 to March 2016. 556 people were selected by purposive sampling. Data collection tools were Usher et al.'s (1984) Loneliness Questionnaire, Child Attitudes Towards Hudson and Rapi Parents (2001), Margolis & Thomas (1980) Narcissism Scale, and Kronberg & Clarkin (1995) Personality Organization Questionnaire.

Data analysis using correlation analysis showed that there is a positive and significant relationship between narcissistic personality construction and loneliness (P <0.01) and there is a positive and significant relationship between parent-child relationship quality and loneliness. Has (P <0.01). Structural equation modeling also showed that narcissism positively and significantly mediates the relationship between the quality of parent-child relationships and feelings of loneliness.

It is suggested that healthy parenting education be done in order to prevent the development of unhealthy personality patterns in children and the possibility of developing personality disorders should be considered in examining feelings of loneliness and depression.
