Predicting the Quality of Caregiving Based on Personality Dimensions, Emotion Regulation strategies, Age, and Marital Duration in Married Women

Caregiving is one of the basic components of married life. Recognizing and analyzing its factors can enrich the couple's relationship. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of personality dimensions, emotion regulation strategies, age and marital duration of married women in predicting their caregiving styles.

The research method was descriptive-correlation and The statistical population includes all married women living in the city of Tehran in the year 2021. The instruments used in the research were: Caregiving questionnaire, emotion regulation questionnaire, and NEO personality questionnaire. The data were analysed using correlation method and stepwise regression.

Among the personality traits, neuroticism and agreeableness predict the dimension of proximity and sensitivity of caregiving. Openness to experience and conscientiousness are also related to the two dimensions of caregiving sensitivity and control, respectively. Neuroticism also predicts the Compulsion dimension of caregiving. The emotion regulation strategy of reappraisal is related to the three dimensions of caregiving: proximity, sensitivity, and control. suppression emotion regulation predicts the control dimension of caregiving. The age of individuals is related to proximity and sensitivity and the marital duration is related to proximity (P< 0.0001).

married women with Neuroticism personality traits provide a lower quality of caregiving in their marital relationships compared to other personality traits such as Agreeableness, Openness to Experience, and conscientiousness. Also, reappraisal emotion regulation strategy can lead to effective caregiving. Increasing the age and marital duration reduces the quality of caregiving.
