The effects of periodontal treatment on pregnancy outcomes: A systematic review of clinical trial studies
Most recent systematic studies have reported on the role of periodontal disease in adverse pregnancy outcomes, which has paved the way for interventional studies in recent years; However, due to the limited number of clinical trial studies, the results of these studies have not yet been collected in a systematic study; Therefore, the aim of present study was to evaluate the effects of periodontal treatment on pregnancy outcomes.
This review (systematic) study was performed during the first six months of 1400 with a review of clinical trial studies on the treatment of periodontal disease during pregnancy and its effects on pregnancy, fetal and neonatal outcomes based on the PRISMA-P guideline, PubMed, Cochran, EMBASE, SciELO, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science and Persian language databases (SID and IranDock) were searched without any time limit to find relevant articles.
Fifteen clinical trial studies published in English were included in this study. The results showed that treatment of periodontal disease on preterm delivery (9 studies: one ineffective study and eight effective studies), pre-eclampsia (2 studies: one effective study and one ineffective study) and low birth weight (4 studies : Two effective studies and two ineffective studies) had contradictory results.
The results of this study suggested that treatment of periodontal diseases may reduce the adverse outcomes of pregnancy, fetus and neonatal.
