Motifs and Symbols in the Tiles of the Historic Golestan Citadel in Tehe- ran

No doubt, one of the most important decorations of Islamic buildings is the work of tiles and the painting of tiles. The use of this art both inside and out multiplied the importance and reputation of the buildings. On the other hand, a vital part of the history of Iranian painting can be obtained through the study of Iranian tile models. During the Qajar period, because of the interest of kings for art, especially the construction of palaces, tile painting was promoted. Golestan Palace is considered an appropriate and essential model in this time. This article has tried to investigate and understand the technique used in the tiles of Golestan Palace and in the most important process, to know more about their designs. The décor of the building plays an important part in the splendour of the architecture. In the Golestan Palace collection, a Naqsh Bar Kashi Golestani was on display, challenging the eyes and thoughts of the public. In this article, the patterns of the Golestan Palace tiles have been analyzed and the characteristics of the tiles of this collection and its essential items have been introduced and presented so that those interested can benefit from a complete and comprehensive knowledge of the Golestan Palace tile decorations. This descriptive and analytical research was conducted using the historical documentation method of the necessary data and information. Golestan Palace tile models can be divided depending on their usage in indoor and outdoor spaces. Most of the motifs in the exterior space are vegetal motifs. The tiles in the interior space are decorated with history, man, hunting ground, mythological and geometric motifs. The main palace has the major part.
