Assessment of 25 hydroxyvitamin D level and its correlation with metabolic syndrome in Mashhad

Message:
Abstract:
Introduction
A number of studies have shown an association between vitamin D deficiency and metabolic syndrome components. Due to high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in IRAN we performed this study to assess links between vitamin D deficiency and metabolic syndrome in Mashhad population.
Materials and Methods
A total of 902 serum samples from Mashhad Study، between 1391-1392، were selected. Cases with history of liver disease، renal failure، malignancy، acute illness، pregnancy and lactation were excluded. Subjects with history of drug usage that interfere with 25 hydroxy vitamin D level or blood sugar and lipid profiles also excluded. Demographic data of patients were recorded and fasting blood sugar، lipid profiles and 25 hydroxy vitamin D were measured for all cases. Subjects were divided according to ATP III criteria in to two groups، with and without metabolic syndrome and 25 hydroxy vitamin D was compared between two groups.
Results
Overall 27. 5% of subjects had metabolic syndrome. Prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was 79. 3%. There was a significant difference in vitamin D level between subjects with and without metabolic syndrome (15. 7±16 ng/ml vs 16. 6±14. 1 ng/ml respectively and p=0. 04) but correlation of vitamin D with components of metabolic syndrome was not significant.
Conclusion
Our study showed that vitamin D level was lower in subjects with metabolic syndrome. Conclusion regarding casualty needed to more studies. Acknowledgement: This study was supported by Mashhad University of Medical Sciences for financial.
